5 things to do instead of scrolling through social media

When the lovely Maisie got in touch with an idea for a collaboration, I was so excited. I absolutely LOVE her blog and was really looking forward to working with her. Nowadays, with the easy access to all social media platforms, we are all glued to our phones. It is beneficial at times, as we can easily contact people and share things we love, but sometimes we just need to switch off. I have picked five things I like to do instead of spending time on social media and they may seem obvious but really, when was the last time you did one of these activities without constantly checking social media?

If you’ve not caught the drift from my blog already, I LOVE to read. So many people say ‘reading just isn’t for me’ but I don’t believe them. However, I do believe that they have just not found the right kind of book for them. There are so many genres so there must be something for everyone. Whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, reading takes you away from everyday life and educates you as well. That can be through reading hard solid facts or learning through reading about other peoples experiences.

I’ve always loved arts and crafts and I usually only really get my supplies out near Christmas time. However, this year I fancied doing something different when I was bored one day so I decided to look out my supplies and do some crafting. You don’t need a lot of things to create a piece of work. I feel like people assume you need to have every craft supply sold to create something however, it can be as simple as buying some cheap paints and attempting to paint something.

Watch a film

It sounds so obvious but how often do you sit down and switch off and watch a film? And I mean without checking your phone several times an hour. I absolutely love going to the cinema and completely switching off for two hours but it is quite pricey doing so. Most of us have Netflix or some sort of streaming subscription so we don’t need to leave the comfort of our own home to enjoy a film. I’ve found myself watching more films now that it’s colder outside and I don’t want to go outdoors as much.

I don’t know what it is but there’s just something about the outdoors that completely soothes me. Whether it’s a 10 minute walk or a whole day outside exploring, there’s just something there that completely puts my mind at ease. And going for a walk is exercise which is super good for you!

I absolutely love baking as the end result is usually SO tasty. I don’t bake as much as I would like as I know that if I have treats in the house, I’ll eat more of them than I should. But when I do bake, I really enjoy it. You have to concentrate on what you’re doing and really pay attention to detail. That’s enough to make me switch off from everything that’s going on around me. I try my best to make my goodies good enough to share with my colleagues. Then I don’t feel that there’s too much cake sitting in the house for me to eat.

I love doing all these things and they may seem so obvious but they allow me to switch off and relax. Head over to Maisie’s blog, Love, Maisie, to see what she does instead of being on social media!

Much love,

  1. I feel like this post is targeted right at me! Lately, i have been scrolling social media a lot and haven’t been productive! I love reading and baking so I need to do more of these! xx corinne

  2. I’m awful at actually turning my phone off and watching a movie – I’m constantly reaching for a quick scroll through Twitter or Instagram! I definitely need to start being more productive, and actually getting up and about, rather than sitting on social media all the time.. 🙈

  3. I adore this post, admittedly I am a social media addict and will spend hours scrolling for the sake of scrolling! So many ideas and now I feel inspired, though I read and watch films a lot, I never thought about crafting and haven’t baked in so long! This has really prompted me to get off my ass and off my phone and start doing things I enjoy!

  4. Baking and reading are some of my favourite pass times and definitely stop me picking up my phone and scrolling for hours! Love the sentiment behind this post, I definitely lose so many hours to Instagram!

  5. My husband would love your post, he gets so fed up with me constantly checking my phone, haha. Seriously, I don’t spend anywhere near enough time as I’d like to on my TBR piles, I’m not much good at baking, and I’m chronically lazy 🙂 But … I do like crafting so I am going to spend more time on that as it’s an activity I can do with my daughter too. Thank you for some great tips! x
